The present study was conducted to assess the usefulness of various ultrasound techniques in predicting the delivery date and fetal outcome. One hundred and eight singleton pregnancies were evaluated by ultrasound examination to predict delivery date and fetal outcome, and were followed till delivery. On the basis of presence and absence of various ultrasound parameters, pregnant women were classified into 4 groups. Groups I, II and III consisted of women in whom the ultrasonographic characteristics were indicative of normal fetal outcome. Group IV consisted of women who were shown to have an adverse fetal outcome by ultrasound examination. Thirty women, including 21 from group I, 4 from group II and 5 from group III, delivered within 3 weeks of ultrasonographic evaluation. The remaining 78 women were counseled regarding their probable delivery date and delivery was performed after a gestation of 38 weeks of pregnancy. Of the 78 women, 61 delivered at a gestation of 38 weeks or more and 17 delivered prematurely. Fetal outcome was compatible with fetal growth retardation in 13, perinatal death in 3, congenital malformation in 6 and intrauterine growth retardation in 11 cases.
